Carpe Diem

In Dead Poets Society, Mr. Keating urges his students to “seize the day” and live life to the fullest. However, not everyone he tries to help achieves this goal. Several students in the film die before they have a chance to really live.

Of all of Mr. Keating’s students, Neil Perry is the one who seems most eager to seize the day. He quits acting in his father’s play so that he can pursue his own passion for theater. He also stands up to his father when he wants to go on a date with a girl his father doesn’t approve of. However, Neil ultimately succumbs to the pressure from his father and kills himself rather than continue living a life he doesn’t want.

Chris Noel also dies before she has a chance to really live. Chris is in love with Knox Overstreet, but her father doesn’t approve of their relationship. Chris runs away from home so that she can be with Knox, but she is killed in a car accident before they have a chance to be together.

Charlie Dalton is another student who dies before he has a chance to really live. Charlie is expelled from Welton Academy after he gets caught vandalizing school property. He then enlists in the army and is killed in Vietnam.

All of these deaths are tragic, but they illustrate that not everyone is able to seize the day and live life to the fullest.
